Can zoos save the world? Join us at the Shedd Aquarium as we explore the ethics of zoos, aquariums, and conservation with authors of “The Ark and Beyond,” including the Center's Senior Scholars Ben Minteer and Harry Greene. With a foreword by our late board member George Rabb and contributing essays by zoo and aquarium leaders, historians, biologists, ethicists and social scientists, "The Ark and Beyond" traces the history and considers the present and future role of zoos as conservation organizations.
This special panel discussion will feature:
• Harry Greene, Cornell University
• Shelly Grow, Association of Zoos and Aquariums
• Charles Knapp, Shedd Aquarium
• Joseph Mendelson, Zoo Atlanta
• Samantha Muka, Stevens Institute of Technology
• Ben Minteer, Arizona State University (moderator)
An opening reception with refreshments and an opportunity to explore the aquarium begins at 5:30 p.m. The panel discussion begins at 6:30 p.m. Copies of “The Ark and Beyond” will be available for purchase, with a book signing after the panel.
Read Ben Minteer and Harry Greene’s reflections on de-extinction and “how far we should go to bring back lost species.”
