Bruce Jennings Faults Health Reform for Ignoring Environmental Health

June 28th, 2009

In a plenary address to a group of national leaders in bioethics and health policy, Bruce Jennings, CHN Director of Bioethics, argued that current health reform measures were too limited to bring about needed changes. In particular, he maintained that the focus on access to health insurance for acute medical and health care costs overlooks the social and environmental factors that actual determine the health status of the population. Acute medical care can be very important to individual health, but it is a relatively small impact on improving the overall health of the nation. The presentation took place in Rocky Gap, Maryland at the 2009 Annual Bioethics Retreat, sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic, on June 24-28, 2009.
