About Our Logo

Our logo is an impression of Humans and Nature, a wood engraving by the contemporary artist Ansell Bray depicting a 19th century Makah Indian (Washington State) grouse rattle. The rattle was used during secular tribal ceremonies. This complex interfusion of the human and the natural—artists and their material mediums, cultural meaning, social practice, and nature—expresses the Center’s mission to combine humans and nature in moral practice and civic responsibility.
