CHN hosts a Conversation with Renowned Buddhist Scholar and Activist

April 15th, 2008

The Center for Humans and Nature was privileged to hold a two-day conversation with Ajarn Sulak Sivaraksa, a prominent scholar, teacher and activist from Thailand. As an intellectual and social critic, Sulak has authored over a hundred books and monographs (in both Thai and English) and has founded numerous organizations, including the International Network for Engaged Buddhism. He has spent his life working for justice, peace, democracy and sustainable livelihoods. Our conversation focused on social justice with ecological vision; Sulak’s interpretation of the meaning of engaged Buddhism; and the connections between his spiritually-inspired teachings and practice and the Center’s explorations of democratic ecological citizenship. In preparation for the two days discussion, participants read Sulak’s most recent book, Conflict, Culture, Change: Engaged Buddhism in a Globalizing World.
