The Bioethics of “Never Let Me Go”

September 8th, 2010

The novel Never Let Me Go was the subject of the Center for Humans and Nature Director of Bioethics Bruce Jennings interview for ABC Radio National in Australia. The focus was the role of literature in teaching bioethics. Jennings discussed a recently published essay in which he had discussed biopower and biotechnology in Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2005 novel Never Let Me Go. A podcast of the interview, which also features Nancy Berlinger of The Hastings Center, can be accessed by visiting The Book Show.

Synthetic Biology Meeting at the Hastings Center

In the coming year, CHN will be working on the ethical and regulatory issues raised by new research manipulating life forms at the most basic level. This new field, being pioneered by Craig Venter and others, is often called “Synthetic Biology.” CHN Director of Bioethics, Bruce Jennings, is working with an international group of scholars on this topic and attended a meeting at The Hastings Center on August 6-7, 2009.
