Juliana DeVries

Juliana DeVries began a three month internship in the Center’s New York office this month. She graduated with a B.A. in May 2011 from Columbia University, where she studied political theory, focusing her coursework on sustainability and minority rights issues. During her undergraduate study, she had the chance to study abroad in Istanbul, Turkey, as well as work at several news organizations, including a daily newspaper in Turkey and Dissent Magazine in New York. During her internship Juliana will be doing research for a new Center project on the ethics of place and the ethics of care with Bruce Jennings and also doing editorial work for Minding Nature. She plans to pursue graduate study next year.

Ideas of Humans and Nature

Bruce Jennings, Director of Bioethics has published a chapter in a new book The Ideal of Nature: Debates bout Biotechnology and the Environment, edited by Gregory E. Kaebnick and published by The Johns Hopkins University Press. The essay explores the relationship between the ideas of nature, culture, and humanness in the work of social contract political theorists. It considers new ways to draw upon the concept of nature in ethical and public policy discussions.

The Center for Humans and Nature Signs on to National Climate Ethics Campaign

The Center signs a  statement of our nation’s moral obligation to address climate change. The statement addresses: “The Moral Obligation to Prevent Suffering and Protect Human Life”; “The Moral Responsibility to Honor Principles of Justice and Equity”; and “The Moral Obligation to Honor and Protect the Processes that Make Life Possible.”

Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time, Relatos: Giving Voice to Local Ethics around the World

Join the Center for Humans and Nature and the Lake Michigan Coastal Program of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources on August 17th, at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center in Porter, Indiana for the free Indiana public premiere of Green Fire: Aldo Leopold And A Land Ethic For Our Time. Curt Meine, the Center for Humans and Nature Director of Conservation Biology and History, and the film’s on-screen guide, will be part of a panel discussion following the film.

Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time

Green Fire continues to spread across the Chicagoland region.  Gavin Van Horn, the Center’s Director of Midwest Cultures of Conservation, will help to facilitate an Earth Day (April 22) screening of Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time.  This free event was organized by professor Michael Bryson, who co-founded the new Sustainability Studies program at Roosevelt University.  The event will be held at Roosevelt University’s Schaumburg Campus (1400 N. Roosevelt Blvd), Alumni Hall, and more information can be found on Micheal Bryson’s Roosevelt University webpage.
